The Amrita SeRVe team worked with the village primary school, which started out from a sorry state. Two out of three classrooms were locked up and declared unsafe because they leaked, so all the students sat in a single room. As well, school toilets were non-functional and the sole water hand pump was out of order.

Our team began a persistent appeal to the concerned authorities to set things right. The final result was renovation to the school building, repair of the toilets, installation of a motorized water pump, and installation of some fans. Amrita SeRVe also distributed school uniforms to the children and a filter for drinking water was installed in the school.

CREATE—The Centre for Research in Advanced Technologies for Education—also began its tablet program in Harirampura, and it quickly became a vastly popular and powerful tool for teaching. In fact, it motivated school children to teach their uneducated mothers the three Rs—reading, writing and arithmetic.
