With the Ghost of Ansel Adams

Naturally talented photographers from our Amrita SeRVe villages

Our first set of Amrita SeRVe Fellows completed their one year of service in our villages across India. Along with the new set of fellows who start now, we gathered in Amritapuri to study ways to move forward with our project to empower the people in our villages.

One of the classes was called “Mobile Photos 101: How to share village stories with pictures”. The students learned the basics of photography and how to apply those to the cameras within their mobile phones. Everyone took good photos, but two men in the class fell in love with the pursuit. Amol from Nani Borvai, Gujarat and Sunil from Dunda, Uttarakhand started taking pictures everywhere they could!

One of the focuses of the photo class was the work of Ansel Adams, a well-known photographer from America who was also an environmentalist. He told the story of nature through his photos, things that could not be expressed in words. Amol and Sunil especially followed this pursuit of thought in the classes about permaculture they took at the Amrita SeRVe farm.

Lokeshwar, their teacher, demonstrated the ways in which nature can be connected with more fully to bring about a union of existence between humankind and the plant world, both serving each other.

Amol and Sunil echoed the teachings in their pictures.

Amol and Sunil were also able to capture the wish and commitment the Amrita SeRVe Fellows had to learning more about farming from a natural perspective as opposed to the common use of pesticides.

They were also able to find expression for the way in which the most beautiful things surround us in our daily lives, if we only take a moment to stop and look.

Sometimes—often times, in fact—this beauty emanates from the most ordinary, common things.
